Pear Pollination Chart: Compatibility & Bloom Guide

The short answer: Most pear trees crop more reliably with a second, genetically different cultivar blooming at the same time. The pollinizer must produce viable pollen and be close enough for bees to move between trees.

Dark green marks a dependable pollen source supported by bloom overlap, viable pollen, and no known genetic conflict. Most are in the same display window; a few use stronger named or multi-year bloom evidence. Light green marks a Conditional choice—usually variable or limited overlap, partial S-allele compatibility, or evidence that is not strong enough for a dependable recommendation. White marks donors that should not be relied on, including sterile or poor-pollen donors and donors whose pollen fertility has not been verified.

A red dot and linked variety name mean FFN sells that pear. Use Sold by FFN to narrow all three chart views without implying current stock.

Can European, Hybrid, and Asian Pears Pollinate Each Other?

EU ↔ AS

European and Asian

Yes, when bloom overlaps. Washington State University and University of Maine Extension both support cross-pollination between the two types. Same-window pairs with viable pollen and no known conflict can be Good; adjacent or thinly documented matches remain Conditional.

HY ↔ BOTH

Hybrids

Evaluate hybrids cultivar by cultivar. A European–Asian or Ussurian hybrid may work across ancestry lines when its flowers overlap and it produces viable pollen, but hybrid ancestry alone proves neither timing nor compatibility.

EVIDENCE FIRST

Practical rule

Start with a documented partner in the same bloom group, then let stronger direct evidence override the coarse label. Kieffer and LeConte are Good despite their Early and Late display buckets because a four-season Mississippi trial recorded workable overlap. Do not rely on an otherwise unsupported Early × Late match, a same-cultivar sport, Bartlett × Seckel, or Luscious and Magness as pollen donors.

Why only three bloom windows? Pear references commonly publish coarse, overlapping groups rather than one consistent five-window framework. Early / Mid / Late is a conservative translation for this mixed 51-variety catalog—not a universal industry standard or the final compatibility verdict. Direct observed bloom dates can override a display bucket. Favor a documented partner and confirm actual overlap in your yard.

What Pear Pollination Requires

  • A different cultivar: most pears are self-incompatible. Partial self-set is insurance, not the best orchard plan.
  • Bloom overlap: harvest season does not predict flower timing. Use Early, Mid, or Late as the first screen, then follow stronger named-pair or observed-date evidence where the matrix provides it.
  • Viable pollen: Ayers, Luscious, Magness, and Orient can receive pollen but should not be relied on as donors. Four additional rare cultivars have unverified pollen fertility and are conservatively shown as Not reliable donors; Douglas is supported as a midseason pollenizer.
  • Bee movement: place partners within 40–50 feet when practical and no farther than about 100 feet. Arkansas Extension recommends 40–50 feet; WSU and UMass Extension warn that fruit set declines beyond 100 feet. Avoid insecticides during bloom.
  • Local observation: after the trees flower, record actual overlap for two or more springs and refine the pairing if needed.

Pear Bloom Window Overview

These are relative groups for finding overlap—not fruit-ripening dates and not fixed calendar dates. Local weather, chill accumulation, elevation, and rootstock can move a cultivar earlier or later.

Pear Pollinizer Quick Reference

Each row names the pear you want pollinated. The final column is a shortlist of up to five matrix-rated Good pollen donors, with pears sold by FFN listed first. Use the matrix for every rated donor direction; a Conditional fallback needs local bloom confirmation or an additional compatibility check.

Important Pear Exceptions

Ayers, Luscious, Magness, and Orient have donor limits

The original Ayers release records sterile pollen. UNH Extension flags Luscious and Magness as poor pollen producers. The USDA pear catalog records Orient as triploid, and USDA ploidy research reports that triploid pear pollen is usually sterile. These cultivars can receive compatible pollen, but they should not be the pollen source.

Warren can supply pollen

University of Georgia guidance identifies Magness and Waite—not Warren—as sterile, while Oklahoma State Extension lists Warren as self-fruitful. The chart therefore treats Warren as a viable donor, but controlled donor evidence is limited; use a better-documented Good partner where one is available.

Direct bloom records can override the display bucket

The chart has four Good directions across different display buckets. WSU specifically names Bartlett and Bosc as compatible, and the Mississippi four-season trial supports Kieffer and LeConte in both directions. The coarse bucket is a planning aid; the observed overlap is the stronger evidence.

Some pairs share one S-allele

Pears use gametophytic self-incompatibility. When two cultivars share one S-allele, only part of the pollen is compatible, so the matrix marks that pair Conditional. This affects Bartlett or Bosc with Red D’Anjou and seven documented Japanese pear combinations. See WSU’s pear S-allele guide and Kim et al.’s Asian pear genotype study.

Ooharabeni has an unresolved genotype

Parentage evidence shows one Bartlett-lineage allele, but not which one. Its pairings with Bartlett, Red D’Anjou, and Hosui are therefore marked Partial rather than presented as dependable Good recommendations.

Sports and a known incompatible pair

Red Bartlett is a sport of Bartlett, Red D’Anjou is a sport of Anjou, and Peggy is a sport of Korean Giant; each sport pair is genetically too similar to serve as its own pollinizer. University of Maine Extension and Purdue Extension identify Bartlett and Seckel as an incompatible combination.

How the Bloom Windows Were Assigned

The chart groups 51 named pears into 12 Early, 28 Mid, and 11 Late display categories using breeder records, extension guidance, parentage, and named pollinizer recommendations. Regional references sometimes place the same cultivar in different groups, so rare or climate-sensitive cultivars are assigned conservatively. The matrix uses stronger pair-specific evidence when available.

Pear Flowers, Bees, and Orchard Placement

Pear flowers provide relatively dilute nectar and can be less attractive to honey bees than other flowers blooming nearby. That makes the chart’s compatibility work only the first half of the plan: keep the selected trees close, protect the bloom, and make the planting inviting to flower-visiting insects.

  • Keep compatible pears within 40–50 feet when practical and no farther than about 100 feet.
  • Avoid insecticide sprays while blossoms are open. If any treatment is essential, follow the label and protect visiting bees.
  • Provide pesticide-free flowers before and after pear bloom plus nesting habitat for bumble bees, mason bees, and other wild bees.
  • In a larger orchard, managed honey-bee colonies can help, but they do not correct an incompatible cultivar pair or a bloom window that does not overlap.

Why Pear Trees Bloom but Do Not Set Fruit

  1. Verify two different cultivars. Two trees of the same cultivar are genetically the same pollination choice, even if their rootstocks differ.
  2. Check the donor column. Ayers, Luscious, Magness, Orient, and unverified donors can receive pollen but should not be trusted as the only pollen source.
  3. Record real bloom overlap. Note first bloom, full bloom, and petal fall for both trees over two springs; climate and weather can move the chart’s relative groups.
  4. Observe flower visitors and weather. Cold, rain, wind, frost, competing bloom, or low bee activity can reduce fruit set even when the pair is compatible.
  5. Check tree condition. A young tree, few flower buds, excessive nitrogen or pruning, shade, drought, saturated soil, disease, and other stress can all look like a pollination failure.

Sources and Method

The matrix combines relative bloom timing, named pollinizer recommendations, observed bloom dates, pollen fertility, S-alleles, type and parentage, and known incompatibilities. A Good rating does not mean every pair has its own field trial: it means supported bloom overlap, viable donor pollen, and no known genetic conflict. Named pairings and multi-year observations outrank a coarse display bucket. Actual bloom can move with region and year.
