Example Food Forest Designs by Lot Size
Example food forest designs are useful only when their assumptions are visible. A copied plan can fail because the north arrow changed, the rootstocks are larger, the soil is wetter, deer are present, or the owner cannot provide the same maintenance.
The short answer: Use examples as patterns, not blueprints. Keep the sequence—access and water, mature trees, pollination, shrubs, lower layers—but replace every plant and dimension with choices verified for your site.
Before You Use an Example
Complete a site analysis, choose the managed sizes in the spacing guide, and reserve workable paths. Rotate or mirror a plan to fit sun, access, slope, and buildings. Check utilities, setbacks, local rules, and mature roots/canopies.
Pattern 1: Small Yard or Courtyard
Use one or two size-controlled focal trees, a clear loop or edge path, vertical training, compact shrubs, containers, and low layers that do not erase access.
- Permanent structure: one dwarf or trained tree with support where required; optional second compatible pollenizer chosen for fit.
- Edges: espalier, grape, or another vine on a purpose-built support—not on a young fruit tree.
- Shrubs: compact berries placed where picking is easy and soil conditions match.
- Ground: herbs, strawberries, or restrained groundcovers installed after the tree is established.
- Work: direct hose access, one storage point, and room to prune every side.

Pattern 2: Suburban Backyard
Organize a handful of tree guilds around a primary path and open sunny corridor. Preserve flexible space for play, annuals, staging, and future changes.
- Upper structure: place the largest tree toward the side where its mature shadow is least harmful.
- Lower trees: group compatible fruit cultivars with harvest access between canopies.
- Shrub bands: use sunny edges for berries; match acidic-soil crops separately where needed.
- Habitat: create a continuous bloom strip and undisturbed shelter away from the busiest path.
- Water: divide irrigation by plant need rather than putting every species on one schedule.
- Expansion: leave one uncommitted sunny pocket until the first phases prove their vigor.

Pattern 3: Acreage or Homestead
Divide the property into management blocks. Keep high-attention food near the main activity center and use lower-frequency orchards, nuts, windbreaks, forest farming, or livestock farther out where access and water support them.
- Zone 1–2: nursery, herbs, berries, high-value fruit, propagation, compost, and frequent harvest.
- Zone 3: main orchard or nut block with equipment turns, pollination plan, and durable water distribution.
- Zone 4: managed woodland, mushrooms, coppice, forage, or low-frequency harvest.
- Zone 5: habitat and observation areas connected rather than isolated scraps.
- System choice: compare agroforestry, forest farming, and silvopasture instead of applying a backyard guild to every acre.

How to Adapt a Pattern
- Replace the example boundary with your scaled base map.
- Rotate for actual north, sun, slope, and prevailing wind.
- Delete every example plant that does not fit climate, soil, water, or rules.
- Insert exact mature canopy sizes and pollination partners.
- Draw paths, utilities, irrigation, and work envelopes.
- Run the maintenance and budget tests.
- Plant only the first complete phase.
Use the climate and plant filters in the shop only after the role and conditions for each slot are defined.
