Red Baron Peach

(1 customer review)

$49.95

Red Baron Peach (Prunus persica) is a low-chill freestone valued for its showy double red blossoms as much as its 3-inch fruit, which offers fine flavor and moderately firm melting yellow flesh. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 6-9 and AHS heat zones 5-9, needs 250-300 chill hours, and is self-fertile, fruiting reliably without a pollinator partner.

3-4′ Bare Root Grafted Tree
Rootstock: Halford – Standard

Halford (Standard):
A peach seedling rootstock giving a full-size, vigorous, well-anchored tree — the workhorse of eastern peach growing. It offers no nematode resistance, so avoid known nematode ground.

• Support: Freestanding; no staking required.

Red Baron was patented (USPP4195, issued January 24, 1978) by David L. Armstrong of Armstrong Nurseries, Inc., in Ontario, California. Armstrong developed the variety from a cross of two unnamed, unpatented parent lines, both tracing their ancestry through an extended series of crossings involving the varieties Luken’s Honey, Rio Oso Gem, Peppermint, Flamingo, Socala, Early Imperial, Chinese Dwarf, Coolidge Double Red, and Helen Borchers. The stated breeding objective was to broaden the spectrum of showy flower colors in peach while retaining good fruit quality — a dual-purpose goal that distinguished the Red Baron program from purely ornamental or purely commercial fruit-breeding efforts. Armstrong Nurseries was the original assignee; rights subsequently transferred to Bear Creek Gardens, Inc. The variety fills a niche held by very few peaches: a tree that offers landscape-grade double red blossoms in late winter followed by a commercially respectable mid-July yellow freestone crop, giving it sustained appeal in both the ornamental and home-orchard markets.
