Qing is a Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima) cultivar that originated not from an institutional breeding program but from a yard tree in western Kentucky, where it was identified as a strong performer and propagated for wider evaluation. It gained recognition through University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry trials, where it became one of that program’s best-evaluated cultivars and a core parent in the reference Peach x Qing x Kohr seed orchard. The cultivar is noted for late budbreak — a practically significant trait that reduces the risk of frost damage to emerging growth — along with stable nut size from an early age, high yield, and long post-harvest storage life. Qing is also widely used as a cross-pollinator, commonly paired with Gideon. While an early narrative suggested a direct Chinese import origin for the name, the documented record points to Kentucky origin; ‘Qing’ may reflect the cultivar’s Chinese species heritage rather than a place of collection. Qing chestnut grows best in full sun — six or more hours of direct light per day — and adapts to a wide range of soil types including clay, loam, and sandy ground, provided drainage is adequate. Chestnuts strongly dislike waterlogged roots; a site with gentle slope or naturally well-drained soil will outperform flat, poorly drained ground. Soil pH between 4.5 and 7.5 is acceptable, though the 5.5–6.5 sweet spot produces the most vigorous growth. The lance-shaped leaves are dark green with a glossy upper surface and finely toothed margins, turning golden to bronze in autumn before dropping cleanly. Bark is gray-brown and develops a rugged, furrowed texture with age. In late spring to early summer, the tree produces long creamy-white male catkins — functionally important for pollen release, though their musky fragrance is conspicuous and not for everyone. Female flowers appear on the same tree but are not self-compatible, making a nearby cross-pollinator essential. The spiny burs that encase the nuts split open at maturity, dropping nuts to the ground and simplifying harvest.
