Hybrid Chestnut

Original price was: $24.95.Current price is: $19.96.

Hybrid Chestnut (Castanea dentata x mollissima) is a blight-tolerant American × Chinese chestnut hybrid producing large, sweet, starchy nuts up to 1.5 inches that improve in flavor after a brief curing period, on a broad-canopied tree that also serves as a premier hard-mast wildlife tree. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 4-8 and AHS heat zones 2-9, needs 300-500 chill hours, and requires cross-pollination with a compatible variety such as Chinese Chestnut or Auburn Super Chestnut to set fruit.

Hybrid chestnut describes open-pollinated or controlled-cross seedling trees combining Castanea dentata (American chestnut) with C. mollissima (Chinese chestnut) ancestry, and sometimes C. sativa (European) lineage as well. Deliberate hybridization between these species dates to the early twentieth century, when the chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) — first identified at the Bronx Zoo in 1904 — made clear that the American chestnut lacked the blight resistance its Asian relatives had developed through long co-evolution with the fungus. Early breeders including James Graves, Clint Hemming, and later the American Chestnut Foundation (established 1983) pursued crosses aimed at combining Chinese blight tolerance with American tree form and nut quality. The term ‘hybrid chestnut’ in the nursery trade spans a spectrum from simple F1 C. mollissima x C. dentata crosses to more complex multigenerational backcrosses. What unites them is the hybrid-vigor principle: the Chinese parent contributes functional blight tolerance, while American or European ancestry can contribute larger nut size and the growth stature that pure C. mollissima sometimes lacks. Because these trees are grown from hybrid seed rather than vegetative propagation of a single named clone, individual trees may vary somewhat in nut size, resistance expression, and mature habit.
