Galaxy Peach

Galaxy is one of a series of flat peach cultivars released by the USDA Agricultural Research Service breeding program in Parlier, California, with the public announcement arriving in 2004. Breeder D.W. Ramming at the ARS San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Sciences Center selected Galaxy from peento-type crosses targeting better flavor consistency and wider zone adaptability than earlier saucer peaches. The flat-peach form traces to ancient Chinese cultivation — the peento or pan tao type grown for centuries before systematic modern breeding — and Galaxy represents the result of applying contemporary ARS breeding methodology to that lineage.

An unpatented public release, Galaxy entered the public domain at introduction in 2003. Fruit quality centers on its firm-textured, melting white flesh with low acid and a clean, delicate peach aroma — hallmarks of the ARS white-flesh breeding emphasis that also produced the Saturn and Donut peach types in the same era.

Adapted to USDA zones 5 through 9, Galaxy asks for full sun, well-drained loamy soil at pH 6.0 to 7.0, and 500 to 600 hours of chilling to complete dormancy and bloom fully. The zone range is wider than most flat peaches, making Galaxy one of the few saucer types suited for both the northeastern United States and the mid-South. As a USDA-ARS release developed in California, Galaxy's disease performance under eastern humid conditions has not received systematic documentation in the Cornell, Rutgers, or NC State trial networks to the same degree as older eastern-bred varieties. This absence of data does not indicate unusual susceptibility, but it does mean management decisions cannot yet draw on variety-specific ratings. Apply the full cultural baseline: remove mummified fruit and prune out cankered wood during winter dormancy to reduce Brown Rot and Canker inoculum; maintain adequate canopy spacing and regular training for airflow; apply OMRI-listed copper-based products during dormancy and at early green-tip as a preventive for Leaf Curl and Bacterial Spot.
