Boreal Blizzard Honeyberry was developed by Bob Bors and colleagues at the University of Saskatchewan Fruit Program and released in 2014 as part of the Boreal series, alongside Boreal Beauty. The Boreal series was built on intercrossed germplasm from Russian, Japanese, and Kuril Islands sources of Lonicera caerulea, selected specifically to push berry size, yield, and commercial quality beyond the earlier first-generation Saskatchewan releases — Borealis, Tundra, and the Indigo series, all released in 2007. Boreal Blizzard produces some of the largest berries in the haskap lineup, with average individual fruit weights reported at approximately 2.8 g and maximums near 3.9 g. Specific cross parentage is not publicly documented by the program. The cultivar is a proprietary, royalty-bearing variety of the University of Saskatchewan. Its release marked the maturation of the Saskatchewan haskap program into a second development phase oriented toward commercial-scale production rather than trial and demonstration, and it is now among the most widely grown haskap cultivars across Canada, parts of the northern United States, and Europe.

Boreal Blizzard forms a dense, upright dome reaching 5 to 6 feet tall and equally wide at maturity — larger than many compact honeyberry types. The dome habit concentrates fruit toward the canopy's exterior, where sun exposure is highest, which partly explains the outsized berry development. Growth rate is medium, so plants take three to four years to reach structural maturity, but the framework established in those early seasons supports decades of production; growers should expect 20-plus years from a well-sited planting. The multi-stemmed, thornless structure makes pruning straightforward: remove crossing or inward-growing canes annually after harvest, and plan a more aggressive rejuvenation cut — taking central woody stems back to 18 inches — once the plant has fruited for ten or more years. Boreal Blizzard is self-sterile — no berry set occurs without pollen from a genetically distinct compatible variety. Bloom arrives in the mid-to-late March through April window, among the earliest of any fruiting shrub, which means pollination depends almost entirely on overwintering bumblebee queens and early native bees; honeybees are rarely active at these temperatures. The cream to chartreuse tubular flowers are shaped to favor bumblebee foraging. For cross-pollination, Boreal Beast Honeyberry is the highest-priority pairing — it overlaps cleanly in bloom time and is sufficiently unrelated genetically. Boreal Beauty Honeyberry and Aurora are also rated compatible. Plant at least one pollinator within 30 to 50 feet; two pollinators of different compatible varieties maximize fruit set across variable-weather springs. Because all honeyberry varieties require cross-pollination, mixed plantings of three or more complementary cultivars outperform single-variety blocks in both yield and berry size.
