Aurora Honeyberry

Aurora Honeyberry was developed at the University of Saskatchewan Fruit Program by breeders Bob Bors and Rick Sawatzky, selected from approximately 10,000 seedlings evaluated over roughly a decade of crossing and field trialing that began in 2002. It draws on Lonicera caerulea germplasm assembled from Russian, Kuril Islands, and Japanese sources — the same foundation stock that underlies the university’s entire haskap breeding effort. Aurora was released to propagators in 2012 and became commercially available to growers and home gardeners in 2014, receiving Canadian Plant Breeders’ Rights certification in 2018. The breeding objective behind Aurora was to produce a mid-season companion variety that would cross-pollinate effectively with the earlier Boreal, Tundra, and Indigo series releases; it was observed to bloom in synchrony with those cultivars and set fruit well when hand-crossed to them. Aurora stands out within the Saskatchewan catalog as a mid-season cultivar with larger berries and sweeter, less astringent flavor than the first-generation releases, representing a meaningful step toward market-quality fresh-eating fruit rather than primarily a processing crop.

Aurora's high chill requirement — roughly 1,000 to 1,200 hours below 45°F — makes it best suited to Zones 2 through 6 and limits reliability in warmer climates unless winters are reliably cold. Aurora grows into an upright, vigorous shrub reaching 4–6 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide, with a moderate-to-fast growth rate that allows young plants to reach productive size within three to four seasons. The fibrous, shallow-to-moderate root system makes Aurora less competitive with deep-rooted companions than many fruiting shrubs — an advantage in food forest plantings where it occupies the shrub layer without competing aggressively with canopy tree roots. Aurora blooms in late March through mid-April — among the earliest-flowering fruiting shrubs in temperate gardens — and requires a compatible cross-pollinator blooming simultaneously within 50–100 feet. The cream-to-pale-yellow tubular flowers are insect-pollinated, relying on early-active native bees and bumblebees that forage at low temperatures. Aurora does not set commercial-quality fruit without a cross-pollinator; planting a single specimen produces little to no berry set. Aurora’s berries are the standout trait of this cultivar: 0.9 to 1.2 inches in diameter and 2.0 to 2.5 grams each, which is large by honeyberry standards.
