Patriot Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Patriot’) is a Northern Highbush blueberry developed cooperatively by the University of Maine and the USDA, combining Phytophthora root rot tolerance with strong cold hardiness and early-season, aromatic dark-blue fruit on a compact, upright bush with fiery orange-red fall color. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 3-7 and AHS heat zones 3-7, needs 1000-1200 chill hours, and requires cross-pollination with a compatible variety such as Chandler Blueberry or Northblue Blueberry to set fruit.

Patriot is a Northern Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) developed cooperatively by the University of Maine Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA and released in 1976. Its lineage combines Dixi, Michigander, and a lowbush-derived seedling — a cross that accounts for both its strong cold hardiness into Zone 3 and its compact, well-branched bush form more typical of half-high types. The breeding program at Maine targeted growers in the upper Midwest and New England who needed an early-bearing, hardy highbush that could survive severe winters without sacrificing fruit quality. Patriot’s moderate resistance to Phytophthora root rot, uncommon among highbush varieties of its era, made it a standard recommendation wherever drainage is imperfect or clay soils are a factor. It carries no patent and remains one of the most widely planted early-season Northern Highbush cultivars in the northeastern United States.
