Northblue Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum x Vaccinium angustifolium ‘Northblue’) is a compact 2–3 foot half-high blueberry introduced by the University of Minnesota in 1983, bearing exceptionally large, dark-blue berries with a sweet-tart wild blueberry flavor and brilliant red-orange fall color. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 3-7 and AHS heat zones 1-6, needs 800-1000 chill hours, and benefits significantly from cross-pollination with compatible varieties such as Patriot Blueberry or Chandler Blueberry to maximize yields.

Northblue was introduced in 1983 by the University of Minnesota fruit breeding program — one of the first cultivars released from a program that began in 1967 with the explicit aim of developing cold-hardy, half-high blueberries for northern climates. The cross that produced Northblue combined the highbush selection G65 and Ashworth as the female parent with the lowbush-derived US3 as the male parent, blending V. corymbosum and V. angustifolium genetics to target both berry size and cold survival. The program was led by J.J. Luby and colleagues at the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station; Northblue was released alongside sister cultivars Northcountry and Northsky as the inaugural trio of the North series. Together these three introductions established the half-high category in commercial and home-garden production across the upper Midwest, Great Lakes region, and northern Plains, and Northblue’s combination of large fruit and hardiness down to approximately -35 degrees F made it the most widely planted of the three.
