Bluejay Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Bluejay’) is an early-season northern highbush blueberry from Michigan State University breeding, bearing light blue, mild-sweet berries with firm, crack-resistant flesh and notable resistance to mummy berry disease. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 4-7 and AHS heat zones 3-7, needs 900-1100 chill hours, and requires cross-pollination with a compatible variety such as Bluecrop Blueberry or Duke Blueberry to set fruit.

Bluejay emerged from the Michigan State University blueberry breeding program and was released in 1978. Specific parentage details are not extensively documented in publicly available literature, but the variety traces through elite northern highbush Vaccinium corymbosum selections developed at MSU and cooperating USDA stations in the mid-twentieth century. Breeders targeted a combination of early-to-midseason ripening, mechanical-harvest suitability, and the firm berry structure that commercial growers in the upper Midwest needed for fresh-market shipping. Bluejay was one of a generation of MSU releases that helped establish Michigan as the leading northern highbush blueberry state. It earned commercial traction across Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario before spreading into the home garden market, where its reliable crops, dry picking scar, and cold hardiness through Zone 4 have kept it in regional extension recommendations for decades.
