Northsky Blueberry
$19.95
Northsky Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum x V. angustifolium) is an ultra-compact half-high blueberry growing just 2 feet tall, producing sweet, mild sky-blue berries with brilliant crimson-orange fall foliage that makes it as ornamental as it is productive. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 3-7 and AHS heat zones 1-6, needs 800-1000 chill hours, and requires cross-pollination with a compatible variety such as Bluecrop Blueberry or Duke Blueberry to set fruit.

Northsky was released in 1983 by the University of Minnesota fruit breeding program as part of the inaugural North series — the same cohort that introduced Northblue and Northcountry and launched the half-high category into broad commercial and home-garden production. The program, begun in 1967 under J.J. Luby and colleagues, crossed northern highbush (Vaccinium corymbosum) with the native lowbush species Vaccinium angustifolium to combine the larger fruit and higher yields of cultivated types with the extreme cold tolerance of wild northern populations. Northsky carries the most compact stature of the original North series releases, a trait that reflects a deliberate selection priority: the shorter the plant, the more reliably it is protected by snowpack during the brutal continental winters of Minnesota and the upper Midwest. Cold hardiness testing placed Northsky at the extreme end of the half-high class, surviving temperatures approaching -40 to -45 degrees F — making it one of the hardiest blueberries in commerce. Its pale blue-sky berry color is the naming characteristic.
