Blueray Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Blueray’) is a mid-season Northern Highbush blueberry released by the USDA in 1955, bearing dark blue, large, aromatic berries with a classic sweet-tart flavor and scarlet to red fall foliage on an upright, open bush. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 4-7 and AHS heat zones 1-6, needs 800-1000 chill hours, and benefits significantly from cross-pollination with compatible varieties such as Aurora Blueberry or Elliott Blueberry to maximize yields.

Blueray was released in 1955 by the USDA and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station breeding program as part of the wave of foundational highbush cultivars that followed Frederick Coville’s pioneering crosses — several of which continued to be released years after Coville’s death in 1937. Its parentage is documented as a cross of (Jersey x Pioneer) and (Stanley x June), giving it a pedigree deep in the original New Jersey wild-blueberry germplasm. The program’s objective was a cold-hardy, early-to-midseason northern highbush combining large fruit size with flavor quality suited to u-pick and direct-market operations. Blueray went on to become one of the most widely planted u-pick varieties across the northeastern and Great Lakes states, a position it held through subsequent decades. Today it remains one of the few mid-twentieth-century USDA releases still actively recommended in land-grant extension guides for home orchards in Zones 4 through 7.
