Polana Raspberry

Polana was bred at the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in Brzezna, Poland and released in 1991 as part of that institute’s primocane red raspberry improvement program. The documented parentage is Heritage × Zeva Herbsternte — two established everbearing cultivars — with the cross designed to capture Heritage’s proven primocane productivity alongside Zeva Herbsternte’s early maturation date. The institute’s breeding program at Brzezna, later reorganized as NIWA Berry Breeding Ltd., produced multiple commercially significant European primocane selections; Polana was among the earliest to reach North American markets, arriving in the 1990s. Its Polish origin stands out from the bulk of American everbearing breeding; the cross produced a cultivar with a notably compact cane habit and an earlier ripening window than Heritage or Caroline, typically reaching peak production from late August through September across zones 4–8. Those traits simplify single-plot management for growers who choose to mow canes in spring and run a primocane-only system.

Drainage is the single most critical site factor for Polana — its shallow, fibrous roots are highly vulnerable to Phytophthora root rot when water pools, so raised beds, mounded rows, or gentle slopes with natural drainage outperform flat clay sites significantly. Soil pH of 5.5 to 6.5 keeps iron and manganese available; annual testing with sulfur amendments prevents nutrient lockout. Consistent moisture of 1 to 1.5 inches per week is needed during midsummer primocane bloom, because drought stress during this window compresses the fall harvest. Mulching with wood chips or straw retains soil moisture, moderates root-zone temperature, and suppresses competing weeds. Full sun — minimum 6 hours daily — is required; shade reduces cane vigor and delays the primocane bloom-to-harvest interval. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring; avoid late-season nitrogen, which drives soft vegetative growth that invites fungal cane diseases.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 4-8
AHS Heat Zone: 2-7
Chill Hours: 800-1000
Sun Requirements: Full Sun (6+ hours direct sunlight)
Soil pH: 5.5-6.5
Soil Type: Loam or sandy loam; rich in organic matter
Soil Drainage: Well-drained; does not tolerate standing water or poor drainage
Water Requirements: Medium; consistent moisture especially during fruit development; 1-1.5 inches per week
Drought Tolerance: Low; requires consistent moisture; mulching helps retain soil moisture
Heat Tolerance: Moderate; performs best in cool summers; heat stress reduces fruit quality and yield
Plant Spacing: 18-24 inches apart in row; rows 8-10 ft apart
Container Suitability: Not recommended; best in ground or large raised beds
How to Prune: For primocane-only management: mow all canes to ground level in early spring (late winter). For two-crop management: after fall harvest, remove only spent floricane tops; in spring thin to 4-6 strongest canes per foot of row. Remove all old, diseased, or weak canes.

Polana produces erect, upright canes in dense clumps reaching 4 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. The compact stature reduces wind lodging compared to taller everbearing types, though a low trellis or T-bar still improves cane support at heavy crop loads. Fine prickles line each cane — less coarse than many floricane varieties, but gloves are advisable at harvest. The root system is perennial with a persistent crown; individual canes are biennial — primocanes fruit in their first fall, then become floricanes that yield a summer crop the following June to July if left standing. The plant spreads by root suckers; removing suckers outside the row prevents unwanted spread. Deciduous foliage turns yellow-orange in autumn. Polana fits edible hedges, food-garden borders, and U-pick rows. Productive life runs 8 to 15 years with proper cane management.

Attracts Wildlife: Bees, butterflies, songbirds, small mammals
Life Span: productive life 8-15 years with proper management

Polana is self-fertile, meaning a single plant or a solid planting of this one variety will set fruit without any additional pollinator. Flowers are white and insect-pollinated, with bees serving as the primary vector; the plant also self-pollinates to a modest degree. Blooms occur in two windows: a spring floricane flush in late April through late May (in two-crop systems), and a primocane flush from mid-July through August that drives the main fall harvest. Planting alongside compatible companion raspberries — Joan J, Heritage, or Caroline are well-matched options — increases bee visitation to the whole planting, which tends to improve fruit set, uniformity, and berry size even in a self-fertile variety. No specialized bloom-timing matching is required; any co-blooming raspberry or nearby flowering herb (borage, comfrey) that attracts pollinators will support Polana adequately.

Bloom Season: Very Early | Late
Bloom Window: Late Apr - Late May | Mid Jul - Mid Aug
Pollination Requirements: Self-fertile; no cross-pollinator required
Pollination Mechanism: Insect-pollinated (bees primary); also self-pollinating
Flower Color: White

Berries measure 0.75 to 1.0 inch in diameter — medium to large for an everbearing red raspberry. Flavor is sweet with mild tartness and a clean aroma; Polana does not carry the pronounced acidity of older summer-bearing types like Latham, which makes it approachable for fresh eating across a broad audience. The flesh is firm and cohesive with a glossy surface, a trait that improves handling during pick-your-own operations and reduces bruising during hand harvest. Refrigerated shelf life is 1 to 2 days — short, as expected for fresh raspberries — but the variety freezes very well, holding texture and color better than softer-berried types. Culinary applications include jams, preserves, pies, cobblers, muffins, smoothies, and syrups. Young leaves can be dried for herbal tea. Yield is among the highest of the everbearing class, with fruiting beginning in the first year after planting — an economic advantage for both home gardeners and small-scale commercial operations who want a quick return on new bramble plantings.

Polana is moderately susceptible to Botrytis fruit rot / gray mold (Botrytis cinerea), the dominant fungal risk during wet harvest periods. Thin canes to 4 to 6 per row-foot, use drip rather than overhead irrigation, and remove rotted fruit promptly to limit sporulation. Phytophthora root rot (Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi) is the most serious vulnerability — this pathogen establishes readily in saturated soil and is nearly impossible to eradicate once entrenched; proactive site selection with well-drained soil is the only reliable defense. Spur blight (Didymella applanata) shows moderate resistance, which moderates pressure. Anthracnose (Elsinoe veneta) and cane blight (Leptosphaeria coniothyrium) are moderate vulnerabilities; fall sanitation — cutting spent canes to soil level and removing them — eliminates primary inoculum for both. On the pest side, Spotted Wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) is the top harvest threat; fine-mesh exclusion netting (0.98 mm or finer) installed before color break is the most reliable organic control. Raspberry crown borer (Pennisetia marginata) larvae bore into crowns — wilting shoot tips in spring signal infestation; remove and destroy affected canes before adults emerge. Raspberry fruitworm (Byturus unicolor) adults attack buds; row covers during early bloom reduce damage. Raspberry aphid (Amphorophora agathonica) is moderately susceptible; insecticidal soap or neem oil controls colonies on leaf undersides.

• Choose a drainage-first site: Polana's susceptibility to Phytophthora root rot makes standing water the greatest risk; plant on a gentle slope or in raised rows rather than flat clay ground.
• Deploy SWD netting before color break: Spotted Wing Drosophila lays eggs in ripening fruit — fine-mesh (0.98 mm or smaller) exclusion netting installed once berries begin to blush is the most reliable organic defense.
• Monitor crowns for borer entry: Check cane bases in early spring for sawdust-like frass indicating crown borer larvae; remove and destroy affected canes immediately rather than leaving them to complete the life cycle.
• Irrigate at the root, not the canopy: Drip irrigation keeps foliage dry, directly reducing Botrytis spore germination during the humid periods that coincide with fruit development in late summer and fall.
• Sanitation is the primary cane disease tool: Anthracnose and cane blight both overwinter in infected cane tissue — cutting spent canes to soil level and removing them from the planting area breaks the primary inoculum cycle better than any spray program.
