Yellow Transparent Apple

Original price was: $49.95.Current price is: $39.96.

Yellow Transparent Apple (Malus domestica ‘Yellow Transparent’) is a 19th-century Baltic heirloom, imported to the US by the USDA in 1870 for its exceptional cold hardiness, that ranks among the very earliest-ripening apples grown – often the first apple off the tree each season. The pale, waxy-skinned fruit is tart and tender, prized less for fresh eating than for cooking down almost instantly into smooth, naturally tart applesauce. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 4-8, needs roughly 800-1,000 chill hours, and, like all apples, requires a compatible cross-pollinator such as Empire Apple or Liberty Apple to set fruit.

Yellow Transparent originated as a chance seedling near Riga, in the Baltic region of the former Russian Empire (present-day Latvia), around 1850. French nurseryman A. Leroy imported the variety to Western Europe in 1852, and the USDA brought it to the United States in 1870 as part of a deliberate search for extremely cold-hardy apple stock suited to the northern states and Great Plains. The variety proved itself quickly: strong-growing, precocious, and able to shrug off winters that damaged less hardy cultivars, it became a fixture of homestead and market orchards from New England to the upper Midwest by the late nineteenth century. Its name comes from the fruit’s thin, waxy, almost translucent skin, which takes on a glowing quality at full ripeness – the same trait behind its many synonyms in other languages, including Transparente Blanche in France and Weisser Transparent in Germany. Because it ripens earlier than nearly any other apple in a given climate – historically described as ten days to two weeks ahead of the ‘Early Harvest’ variety – Yellow Transparent held real economic value as the first fresh apple to reach market each summer, well before refrigeration made off-season fruit routine. Though overshadowed commercially by newer, better-shipping cultivars, it remains a favorite in home orchards and heritage collections for its hardiness, precociousness, and unmatched earliness.
