White Imperial Currant (Ribes rubrum ‘White Imperial’) is a historic American white currant — developed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station around 1890 — bearing translucent white fruit with a pink blush and the mildest, sweetest flavor of any currant. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 3-7 and AHS heat zones 1-6, needs 800-1200 chill hours, and is self-fertile, fruiting reliably without a pollinator partner.

White Imperial is an American-bred white currant selection released by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva, with introduction dates cited as approximately 1890 to 1895 in the historical record. It was among the earliest releases from the Geneva station’s Ribes program and became the most widely grown white currant cultivar in North America. White-fruited selections of Ribes rubrum had been documented in European gardens since the late medieval period; the German physician Johannes Elsholtz described multiple red and white variants in his 1682 Diaeteticon. White Imperial emerged from selection within existing Ribes rubrum germplasm rather than from a directed cross, and no specific parentage was documented. It became the reference standard for sweetness in the white currant class worldwide and is listed by preservation organizations as an heirloom of ongoing horticultural significance — a variety maintained primarily in specialty and heritage cultivation rather than commercial production.
