Spartan Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Spartan’) is a Northern Highbush blueberry released by the USDA in 1977, bearing exceptionally large, light-blue berries with intensely sweet-tart flavor on an upright 4-to-6-foot shrub with orange-red fall foliage. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 4-7 and AHS heat zones 4-7, needs 850-1050 chill hours, and benefits significantly from cross-pollination with compatible varieties such as Bluecrop Blueberry or Duke Blueberry to maximize yields.

Spartan is a Northern Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) released by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in 1977. Microsatellite marker studies of the USDA-ARS National Clonal Germplasm Repository identify its parentage as Earliblue crossed with the USDA selection US 11-93; earlier nursery literature sometimes cited different parent designations, but molecular evidence supports this lineage. The variety was selected with a focus on berry size and flavor intensity — qualities that from its first trials distinguished Spartan from contemporaries that tended to trade off one against the other. It found early commercial adoption in the Pacific Northwest and Michigan before becoming a fixture in home-garden plantings across Zones 4 through 7, where its midseason harvest window sits between the early Duke and the very-late Elliott. Spartan carries no active patent and remains a flavor benchmark among Northern Highbush cultivars more than four decades after its release.
