Powderblue is a Rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium virgatum) bred from a cross of Tifblue (female) and Menditoo (male), released in 1978 jointly by the USDA Agricultural Research Service and North Carolina State University. Tifblue itself traces to a cross of Ethel and Clara, two of the foundational wild selections brought into cultivation at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, Georgia, beginning in the 1930s; Menditoo derives from Myers crossed with Black Giant. The 1978 release targeted commercial Rabbiteye growers who needed a later-season complement to Tifblue with improved berry size and flavor. Powderblue berries are notably light blue — the powder-coated appearance that gives the variety its name — with a small dry scar, good firmness, and sweet, mild flavor that holds well after harvest. It quickly established itself as a commercial standard across the Southeast and Gulf Coast and remains a widely recommended late-season Rabbiteye in UGA and NCSU extension guidance.

Bark is reddish-brown on young canes and matures to gray-brown; new growth flushes a bronzy-green in spring.
