O’Neal Blueberry

O’Neal is a southern highbush blueberry released jointly by North Carolina State University and the USDA in 1987. It was bred by James Ballington at NCSU from a cross of ‘Wolcott’ (female parent) x FL64-15 (male parent). Wolcott was a pioneering NCSU highbush release bred for stem canker resistance; FL64-15 is a University of Florida low-chill selection carrying V. darrowi genetics that impart southern adaptation and reduced chilling requirements. The NCSU blueberry program, which began in the 1930s in partnership with USDA, shifted focus in the 1970s toward southern highbush development as low-chill genetics became available and the commercial demand for early-ripening, fresh-market cultivars grew. O’Neal emerged from this phase as an early-season selection with medium to large fruit and genuine field performance across the Southeast. It became a commercial staple in North Carolina and neighboring states, valued for first-to-market ripening timing and high flavor ratings in consumer taste trials. O’Neal has also been used as a pollen parent in subsequent University of Florida breeding work.

O'Neal thrives in full sun with well-drained, highly acidic soil at pH 4.5-5.0; heavy clay or alkaline ground should be amended with elemental sulfur and generous organic matter well ahead of planting.
