$29.95

Kadota Fig (also known as Dottato; Ficus carica) is one of the oldest continuously documented fig cultivars in Western pomology, producing compact uniform golden-yellow fruit with mild honey-sweet flavor ideal for canning, drying, and preserves. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 7-10 and AHS heat zones 6-11, and is self-fertile, fruiting reliably without a pollinator partner.

Kadota is one of the oldest continuously documented fig cultivars in Western pomology, known in Italy as Dottato — its true name — and cultivated across the Mediterranean for an estimated two thousand years. It traveled to California with Spanish missionaries as early as 1769 and became a staple of the state’s commercial fig industry from the early twentieth century onward. The variety was formally presented to California’s fig-growing community at the first Fig Growers’ Institute in Fresno in January 1917, with horticulturist Stephen H. Taft of Sawtelle credited for identifying and championing its commercial value. By 1946, Kadota accounted for more than fifteen percent of California’s total fig production, supplying the canning industry before fresh figs reached mainstream retail. Some pomological sources describe Kadota as a sport of Dottato rather than an identical clone, though the distinction is debated; genetic documentation of the two as separate cultivars has not been established in the peer-reviewed literature. The variety has no recorded hybrid parentage, carries no plant patent, and propagates freely from cuttings. It is held in the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository under multiple synonyms including Dottato, Peter’s Honey, and Florentine.
